OCD symptoms
Obsessions (intrusive, unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental rituals) can take over time and attention. Naming them is the first step toward relief.
Common symptoms
- Obsessions: intrusive doubts about harm, contamination, morality, or “rightness”
- Compulsions: checking, cleaning/washing, repeating, ordering, counting
- Reassurance seeking (asking, googling) that temporarily reduces anxiety
- Mental rituals (reviewing, praying, neutralizing images/words)
- Avoidance of triggers (doors, knives, numbers, certain words)
- Perfectionism and intolerance of uncertainty
- Time-consuming rituals that feel “have to,” not “want to”
