OCD symptoms

Obsessions (intrusive, unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors or mental rituals) can take over time and attention. Naming them is the first step toward relief.

Common symptoms

  • Obsessions: intrusive doubts about harm, contamination, morality, or “rightness”
  • Compulsions: checking, cleaning/washing, repeating, ordering, counting
  • Reassurance seeking (asking, googling) that temporarily reduces anxiety
  • Mental rituals (reviewing, praying, neutralizing images/words)
  • Avoidance of triggers (doors, knives, numbers, certain words)
  • Perfectionism and intolerance of uncertainty
  • Time-consuming rituals that feel “have to,” not “want to”

How it can affect daily life

  • Morning/evening routines take much longer than planned
  • Difficulty leaving home or starting tasks due to checking
  • Strained relationships from reassurance cycles or rigidity
  • Reduced productivity at work/school from mental replay
  • Skin irritation or damage from frequent washing/cleaning
  • Financial or time costs (replacing items, repeating steps)
  • Less enjoyment and spontaneity due to strict rules/rituals
